Redis vs Memcached for AI Cache: Comparison for LLM and Embedding Cache

Compare Redis and Memcached for caching AI responses, embeddings, and context. Discover which cache best fits your LLM and RAG applications.

Redis

An in-memory data structure store that works as cache, message broker, and database. Redis supports strings, hashes, lists, sets, and sorted sets. Ideal for session state, rate limiting, pub/sub, and semantic cache for LLM responses.

Memcached

A simple, high-performance distributed cache for key-value pairs. Memcached is purely for caching — no persistent data structures. Extremely fast for read-heavy workloads and simple caching of embeddings or API responses.

Verdict

Redis is more flexible and better suited for most AI cache scenarios: semantic caching, session state, and rate limiting. Memcached wins for pure, simple caching where you only need get/set and want maximum simplicity. For LLM apps with semantic cache Redis is the standard.

Our recommendation

AVARC Solutions uses Redis (Upstash or Redis Cloud) for AI caches: semantic cache for RAG, rate limiting, and session state. We only consider Memcached for very high read load when no Redis-specific features are needed.

Frequently asked questions

Semantic cache stores LLM responses based on query meaning (embedding similarity), not just exact string match. Similar questions reuse the cached response. Redis with vector search supports this.
In pure get/set benchmarks Memcached can be similar or slightly faster due to its simplicity. For complex operations (hashes, sorted sets) Redis wins. For simple cache the difference is often negligible.
Redis has RediSearch with vector similarity (HNSW). You can cache embeddings and retrieve similar queries for semantic caching.
